THE RESIDENTIAL COACHING : The 'Nest', a sprawling six-acre residential cricket-coaching facility in Pudupakkam, is situated 30 km off Chennai. Recently, 'The Nest', added a first to Tamil Nadu cricket with a state-of-the -art indoor cricket practice facility called 'Batting Cage' using bowling machines on astro-turf.
It has a residential facility for the kids where about 25 trainees could easily be accommodated in a dormitory. The kids are provided with bunker beds. The structure consists of rooms at the ground floor which houses coaches from cricketers who come in as coaches. There is a big cricket ground with nine different pitches for the trainees. There is also a library available for the trainees with a variety of books on cricket. A lot of video replays of the old matches are also done. The academy introduces the trainees to older generations of cricketers. The Nest is fully operational during the summer months and during weekends all through the year.
The highlights of the Nest training are:
- Individual attention to the trainees
- Video session & Analysis
- Physical fitness program
- Beach training
- Batting in the "CAGE" against BOLA bowling machine
- Well equipped library with books and videos
- Recreation area
The Nest: The fees structure depends on the number of days of the training, with boarding and lodging.
The Summer Camp: During the summer vacation the course is conducted for different age groups at The Nest offers the trainees boarding and lodging facility. The course duration will be 45 days to 60 days.
BATTING CAGE It's a real test for the budding batsmen as they face deliveries close to 99 miles per hour from the 'Bola'. "We can programme the way we want. We can get it to pitch the special designed ball at a particular length at a certain amount of pace and swing, and it will not only land the ball at the same area, but also deliver a surprise ball, like the Yorker. The machine can also send down spin" - says V.B.Chandrasekhar.
"Working on a specific problem in a cricketer is much easier now. We can get him to play the same delivery until the chink is ironed out. They also learn to get used to pace and bounce" adds 'VB'. The indoor facility has 20 160 watt lights and a roof that blends steel with aluminum. 'VB' has spent around Rs.20 lakhs on the indoor facility, with Mr.Chellappan, Managing Director, Numeric Power Systems Ltd., being a major sponsor.
